Why Your Big “Why” Isn’t Enough—And What’s Missing

Updated: Sep 26

If you’ve ever set out to change your life, you’ve probably heard the advice: “You need a big why.” Coaches, books, and motivational speakers all say it. Make your why so big that it pulls you through any obstacle! Find the reason that makes you cry! Let your why be your fuel!

But what if you’ve done that—and it still isn’t working?

Here’s the truth: Having a big why is powerful, but by itself, it’s not enough. In fact, sometimes, a huge, expansive why without a framework to support it can leave you feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, or even more stuck than when you started.

The Problem With a Big Why Alone

Imagine your big why is like the frame of a house. It’s the vision, the dream, the reason you want more for your life. Maybe your why is “I want to be healthy for my children,” or “I want to create financial freedom for my family.” These are beautiful, important reasons. But if all you have is the frame—no foundation, no walls, no support beams—what happens when the storms of life hit? The frame alone can’t hold you up.

Without a framework, your why can feel abstract and unattainable. It becomes a distant ideal, something you aspire to but can’t quite reach. You might find yourself thinking, “If my why is so big, why do I still struggle to follow through?” Or worse, you might start to believe that there’s something wrong with you, when really, it’s just that you’re missing the structure that makes change possible.

What’s Missing? The Embodie Her Framework

What your big why needs is a foundation—a set of supportive beliefs, habits, and self-acceptance practices that ground your vision in reality. This framework includes:

  • Supporting Whys: Smaller, more immediate reasons that keep you going day to day. These are like the rebar in your foundation, giving your big why strength and flexibility.

  • Radical Acceptance: The willingness to accept where you are right now, without shame or judgment. This creates the emotional safety you need to grow.

  • Awareness of Self-Rejection: Noticing where you might be unconsciously saying “no” to yourself, and gently shifting those patterns.

  • Actionable Rituals: Simple, daily practices that move you closer to your goals, one step at a time.

How to Build Your Framework

Start by breaking your big why into smaller, manageable pieces. What are the little whys that support your bigger vision? What daily actions or rituals can you commit to that align with your purpose? And most importantly, where can you offer yourself more acceptance and compassion along the way?

Remember: Your big why is the spark, but the framework is what keeps the fire burning.

You Deserve More Than Just Motivation

Motivation can come and go. But when you have a strong framework—a foundation of acceptance, awareness, and actionable steps—your big why becomes something you can actually live, not just dream about.

So next time you feel stuck, don’t blame your why. Instead, ask yourself: What’s missing from my foundation? How can I build the structure I need to support my dreams?

Your why is worth it. And so are you.
